The Ore Mountains Christmas Pyramid
In the middle Ages it was a tradition to suspend fir branches because of the bad ghosts, which
came out in the dark season. Candles were used to light up the houses all the night long. This was
the reason for the people to create pyramids with artful figures. This is very similar to the Christmas
tree’s history, which developed in huge cities. But in rural districts the poor population preferred
simple racks with four rods, which were entwined with fir branches. Inside the rods
the manufacturers placed artful figures. The name for the pyramids is shaped by Napoleon
Bonaparte, who made at this time one of his numerous campaigns to Egypt. The Pyramids there
reminded the farmers their racks with lights.
But only in year 1830 the pyramids came into fashion, because at that time the cheaper paraffin
was found and so also the poor population could afford the christmas pyramid.
